Sustainable Viticulture
A natural and efficient way to nurture our vineyards.

Since 2022, at Akarregi Txiki we have incorporated a traditional and ecological method for maintaining our vineyards: grazing with native sheep, known as sasiardiak.
These sheep, native to our region, are perfectly adapted to the environment, which makes them resilient, self-sufficient, and easy to manage. During lambing season, for example, they organize themselves and rarely require human intervention.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS METHOD
Reduced use of herbicides.
The sheep naturally keep grass growth under control. Thanks to this, we have been able to considerably reduce the use of chemical products, such as herbicides, in our vineyards.
Healthier and more vibrant soil
Since implementing this system, soil life has increased significantly. We have observed a greater presence of earthworms, a clear sign of fertile, balanced, and regenerating soil.
Natural and circular fertilizer
The sheep naturally fertilize the soil, thus closing the nutrient cycle and contributing to more sustainable agriculture.
During the three-week harvest, the sheep are moved to the ikuilu (barn). The rest of the year, they graze freely throughout the vineyards. Although, as often happens with animals, they occasionally escape, showing their free spirit.
OUR COMMITMENT
This method is yet another example of our commitment to sustainability, respect for the environment, and the pursuit of viticulture that not only focuses on the final product but also on the health of the landscape, the soil, and the ecosystem as a whole.
We continue working so that every glass of Akarregi Txiki txakoli represents not only the taste of Getaria but also a responsible and conscious way of understanding the land.
